Women in Non-Traditional Careers Share Their Stories
On July 20, several inspiring women from LADWP’s workforce were joined by Board President Cynthia McClain-Hill, General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams and IBEW Local 18 Business Manager Gus Corona for an informational panel about women in “non-traditional” careers. The event was sponsored by the Women’s Council and the LADWP Society for Women Engineers, and drew over 270 attendees. In addition to moderator Construction and Maintenance Superintendent Vicki Smith, panelists included Electrical Mechanic Hannah Cooper, Construction Helper Olga Gill, Meter Reader Claudia Magana, Heavy Duty Truck Operator Erica Minor, Park Maintenance Supervisor Lizandra Morelos and Water Treatment Supervisor Jacqueline Ochoa. Attendees heard about the unique challenges the panelists have faced throughout their careers, resources that have helped them along in their career paths and potential steps to take to create positive change in work environments.
LADWP Engages Future Lineworkers
Leaders of LADWP’s Electric Distribution Mechanic (EDM) Training Program, and Recruitment Services, made their best pitch to 250 students at a career fair held at the picturesque Northwest Lineman College in Oroville, CA on June 30. LADWP representatives met and provided information to lineworker trainees set to graduate soon. Current EDM Line Patrolmen Anthony Vaughn and Kyle Morgan, along with Power’s Manager of Training Brian Williams, Superintendent of EDM Training Mike Traweek and previous Superintendent of EDM Training Kevin Mount, connected with students by sharing the importance, prestige, camaraderie and pride of working for the Department. Their first-hand knowledge and many years of experience provided potential applicants with valuable insights and a deeper understanding of LADWP’s working environment and training methods. Recruitment Services staff Jennifer Shar, Christopher LeMarr and Ardy Rezamand also walked students through the application process and highlighted the excellent pay and many other benefits of working at the Department.
