New Field Ergonomics Services
Developing a safe work environment within LADWP is one of the most important things we can do to ensure the safety of our employees. Because training employees to do their jobs safely and evaluating jobs to mitigate hazards is essential to safety, Corporate Health and Safety has developed a versatile Field Ergonomics Program aimed to reduce the occurrence of ergonomic-related injuries, such as strains and sprains. Ergonomic-related injuries are a leading cause of injuries across the industry, and Corporate Health and Safety debuted two new services to assist employees. For more information and resources, visit Corporate Health and Safety’s Ergonomic site here.
Safety In Motion’s Simplicity Training

This one-hour training is tailored to workers to ensure that information is simple to retain. Techniques are proven to reduce physical stress and strain, boost balance and strength and improve productivity. Employees learn to make simple, practical changes in the way they reach, lift, carry, push or pull. Training modules are customized by work environment and job task, and can be delivered in a variety of settings. Training materials provided can also be customized to the division, and include live training, knowledge refreshers, handout cards and task-specific posters designed to reinforce key concepts. Watch an introductory video to the training here.
The Simplicity Training (ERG301, one-hour duration) can be requested through the Corporate Health and Safety training request application, with supervisor approval. To schedule a training class, consult on customizing training materials, or for more information contact Ergo@ladwp.com.
You can also become a Peer Trainer by attending the Train-the-Trainer Workshop (ERG302, four-hour duration) that can be requested through the Corporate Health and Safety training request application, with supervisor approval.
VelocityEHS Humantech’s Field Ergonomic Evaluations

VelocityEHS evaluates the risk of ergonomic-related injuries using sensor-less motion-capture technology – no need to wear instruments, devices or suits. The application conducts ergonomic risk assessments and identifies specific risks, causes and controls, with the goal of improving employee well-being, job performance and job satisfaction.
The process identifies techniques, postures, forces and exposures to reduce injury and increase comfort. Risk and root cause analysis helps detect why a worker is experiencing physical stress when performing a task, and the application can also track improvements, progress and metrics. Privacy controls ensure that backgrounds and faces are blurred, and the evaluation complies with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Video demos are viewable here and here.
Field ergonomic evaluations can be requested by contacting Ergo@ladwp.com, with supervisor approval.
Fall Protection

According to the National Safety Council, in the United States in 2020, 805 workers died in falls and 211,640 were injured badly enough to require days off of work. A Fall Protection Program plays an essential part in preventing injuries to employees who work at heights six feet above a lower level or four feet above a hazard. The benefits of this type of program include a safer work environment, reduced risk of injuries and fatalities, and improved employee morale.
In June, Corporate Health and Safety will be releasing a brand-new version of the written program. Corporate Health and Safety maintains the written program, provides training and offers field services and consultation for all jobs and projects.
