Lineman’s Rodeo 2023
On May 20, LADWP and IBEW Local 18 welcomed the annual L.A. Lineman’s Rodeo back to the Truesdale Training Center in Sun Valley. The day was filled with team and individual competitions featuring lineworkers from nine utilities across the Western United States as they showcased their job skills and safety training prowess. This year, 22 journeymen-level and 22 apprentice-level lineworker teams competed.
The day began with opening ceremonies, which included Ryan Harrison, a Line Patrol Mechanic for Overhead Transmission, securing the American flag to the flag pole as he hung suspended from a helicopter. “I’m happy to be here today with my family and represent the Department. It’s great to share the day with them and show them what I do,” said Harrison, who went on to compete in multiple competitions.
During the competitions, lineworkers completed timed, technical exercises on utility equipment and poles where they demonstrated their climbing ability and athleticism as well as their crucial emergency response skills.
“The Lineman’s Rodeo is where we bring together the best of the lineworkers to compete and demonstrate their unique skillsets and expertise to their family members and to their peers. This is a stage where they show their passion for their profession. It’s about honor, it’s about safety and it’s about job outreach. It’s about the duty that we take very seriously, which is keeping the lights on.”

The top overall finishers in the Journeyman-level team competition included Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in first place, and two teams from Burbank Water and Power in second and third place. In the Apprentice-level competition, overall winners were Jesus Lopez (LADWP), Tyler Scurria (LADWP) and Timothy Schmauz (Portland General) in first, second and third place, respectively.
Concurrently with the competitions, spectators and participants were able to browse through 69 vendor booths selling gear and supplies. Children in attendance also took part in the family-friendly event with face painting, snow cones, a rock climbing wall and a petting zoo.
"It’s so wonderful seeing all of the families and competitors enjoying the day together. The Department and IBEW Local 18 have once again done a great job organizing the event,” said Board of Water and Power Commissioner Nicole Neeman Brady.
Winners of this year’s competitions were recognized during the awards ceremony at the end of the event, and will now set their sights on the International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, Kansas this October.
