AAPI Heritage Month Introduces New Events and Employee Resource Group
By Paola Adler
Each May since 2020, LADWP has celebrated Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This year was particularly noteworthy, as the Department marked the debut of LADWP’s first official employee resource group: ASPIRE (Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Supporting Progress, Inclusion, Respect and Empowerment). Led by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in partnership with Communications and Corporate Strategy, the Department offered a slate of activities for employees to celebrate the month and Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) leadership.
Day of Service
On May 20, LADWP participated in the Department of Public Works’ Day of Service event to beautify and clean five historically AAPI neighborhoods across the city: Chinatown, Thai Town, Little Tokyo, Historic Filipinotown and Koreatown/Little Bangladesh. The Department also provided hydration stations for the volunteers. This was LADWP’s second time partnering in the event alongside many other city and local government participants.
Virtual AAPI Events
Two virtual events took place the following week. The first, on May 22, was a virtual visit to the Japanese American National Museum (JANM). Museum staff presented powerful artifacts, images and documents found in JANM’s collection that showcased the history of the Japanese American experience. Most powerful of all was a presentation by June Berk on her experience with World War II incarceration in Rohwer, Arkansas. The 144 attendees were moved by Berk’s story of tragedy, persecution and resilience, and were able to ask questions about how the experience affected her family and her views on discrimination in the U.S.
“I thank June for her description of Rohwer. My grandparents were sent there also, but never really talked about it, so I didn't know much about it, except my mom was born in the Santa Anita Clubhouse. Sadly, my grandparents came back to their home on Berendo to find a parking lot.”

Two days later on May 24, LADWP staff gathered on WebEx for an AAPI Heritage Month Panel: Advancing Leaders through Opportunity. About 180 attendees listened in on an engaging discussion about leadership and representation in and outside of the workplace. Panelists included Audio Visual Technician Serena Beltran, Architect Esther Lee, Systems Programmer Quinton Han, Environmental Specialist Tamiko Higashiyama, Electrical Engineer Vipul Sampat and Management Analyst Joan Alexandria Tagle. The event was hosted by Media Relations Manager Ellen Cheng and Power Engineering Manager Jason Hills, and featured speeches by Board President Cynthia McClain-Hill, General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams and SAGM of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Gregory Reed. Watch the event recording above.
“Thank you to everyone of AANHPI heritage in our LADWP family for your contributions. We honor and celebrate this month with you. Together, let’s learn from one another and continue building connections that transcend borders and bring us closer as a community.”

ASPIRE’s Debut
ASPIRE also planned and hosted several additional AAPI Heritage Month events in May to engage with employees and share cultural traditions. Every Wednesday, employees visiting the JFB cafeteria enjoyed Asian-inspired lunch specials, including Korean beef bibimbap, Japanese chicken katsu with curry and Thai shrimp and chicken pad thai. The group also met with employees at Temple and Main Street yards to introduce their group and share pastries with traditional Asian flavors. Employees can learn more about ASPIRE by watching their May 23 presentation at the Board of Water and Power Commissioners meeting, available on YouTube, or by emailing aspire@ladwp.com.
