LADWP Mentors Budding Engineers at L.A. City HBCU Research and Tech Day
LADWP staff participated in the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Committee Innovation Research and Tech Day this past November at L.A. City Hall. The event provided an opportunity for future engineers from HBCUs to get familiarized with the various engineering challenges faced by City departments in providing sustainable and equitable services to the residents of Los Angeles. Participating HBCU schools included Hampton University, Alabama A&M University, Morehouse College, North Carolina A&T University and Howard University.
Environmental Engineering Associate Nima Jabbari Environmental and Civil Engineering Associate Marcelo Martinez, both from the Water Quality division, provided mentorship and guidance to Morehouse College students Chase Garrison and Matias Germain, pictured above with Martinez. The two students worked on providing LADWP with potential solutions for future recycling of the 96 million shade balls currently deployed on the L.A. Reservoir. Their research and recommendations considered aspects of environmental and community impact, logistics and practicality while focusing on water quality, sustainability and continuity of reservoir operations.
“Our students tackled a challenging topic facing LADWP’s Water Operations and Water Quality Divisions. Their research contributions added value to our ongoing efforts to choose the best course of action and it also provided them with real world engineering experience that will benefit them in the future.”

The LADWP mentored team was selected as one of the top three finalists to present their findings to the Board of Public Works. Participation in HBCU Committee Innovation Research and Tech Day and other similar programs helps LADWP expand its social, academic, and knowledge pool as it seeks to hire the best engineers in the nation.
