Women’s History Month Celebration Continues to Grow
By Paola Adler
LADWP’s 2,400 employees who identify as female are essential to our workforce. They have made an enormous impact on the Department’s culture and are an integral part of our most important achievements. The Department began expanding our events and programming for Women’s History Month in 2020, and we have continued to grow our celebration year-after-year despite the challenges of the pandemic. This year, with the leadership of our Women’s Council, two exciting events were planned to engage our workforce, with a bigger event on the horizon in May.
International Women’s Day Celebration
We kicked off the month with our International Women’s Day event on March 8 with various activities held at JFB and virtually. Employees were invited to wear pink and purple and pose for a group picture (shown on our cover page) to show their commitment to #EmbracingEquity, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day. The day was celebrated across all locations, pictured above are a group of employees proudly donning pink and purple decorations at LADWP’s Valley Saticoy yard.
In the morning, almost 125 participants attended a virtual webinar with Deputy Mayor for Energy and Sustainability Nancy Sutley hosted by our Green Team, focusing on her contributions as a female leader in sustainability. Later on, more than 350 employees enjoyed the Women’s History Month Fair in the cafeteria and patio, which featured information and giveaways from the Women’s Council, LADWP’s Society of Women Engineers (LADWP-SWE) and the Water and Power Community Credit Union, which also sponsored a heart-healthy lunch for attendees. The Women’s Council also coordinated an International Women’s Day pledge, where employees could commit actions to advance gender equity in the workforce, attracting almost 160 pledges throughout the week.

Second Annual Women’s Power Walk
Despite windy conditions, employees and family members were in good spirits at LADWP’s second annual Women’s Power Walk, held Saturday, March 25 at the L.A. Reservoir. Sponsored by the Women’s Council and LADWP-SWE, over 250 attendees came together for the 3-mile walk. Special guests included Board President Cynthia McClain-Hill, Vice President Cynthia M. Ruiz, Commissioner Nurit Katz and General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams. The Water and Power Credit Union fueled walkers by contributing snacks, and LADWP also raffled off several health and wellness items to attendees.
Many staff members worked together to make this yearly tradition a success, including employees from Customer Service, Corporate Strategy and Communications; Water Operations; Security Services; Human Resources; Office of DEI and the Board Office.

Coming Up: Inaugural Women’s Career and Wellness Expo
The Women’s Council had planned an additional, landmark event for March: the first ever LADWP Women’s Career and Wellness Expo. The event was postponed due to rain, and is now scheduled for Saturday, May 6. The Department will be welcoming students, community members and employees to Truesdale Training Facility in Sun Valley for a day of career information, live equipment demos, a wellness fair and other family-friendly activities. All LADWP employees are encouraged to attend!
