Native American Conference Added to LADWP Recruitment Outreach
LADWP is excited to announce the addition of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) to its growing list of diversity conferences in order to expand gender equity and diversity recruitment efforts. AISES is a national, nonprofit organization focused on substantially increasing the representation of Native Americans in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and careers. LADWP Recruitment staff attended their first AISES regional conference, hosted by Cal Poly Pomona, on June 4. LADWP representatives included Civil Engineering Associates Mahdi Jorat and Kristina Billedo, Electrical Engineering Associate Al Medina, and Mario Morales from the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, who were in attendance to assist in recruitment of future Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Associates.
HBCU Students Participate in City of L.A. Virtual Internship
In an effort to improve equity and bolster the ranks of African Americans within the workforce, City of Los Angeles agencies, including LADWP, hosted a six-week, paid virtual online internship for 13 engineering students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU’s). LADWP hosted programming during the first week of the internship, from June 15-17. Interns were given a warm welcome by General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams, former Senior Assistant General Manager for Power Engineering and Technical Services Reiko Kerr, and Senior Assistant General Manager of the Water System Anselmo Collins.
The program gave HBCU interns the opportunity to meet LADWP staff working in various fields and attend daily information sessions on topics like the hiring process, LA100, EV infrastructure, tools and technology, and Operation Next. Interns were also taken on virtual field trips to Department facilities. The intent of the program was to create further awareness of LADWP at HBCU campuses and to showcase the Department as a welcoming, innovative and exciting place to work.
